Although owning a business has always been a dream of hers, she admits balancing work with home life is a challenge. The children, who range in age from three to five years old, are selected by their teacher and their social worker. “This year Vanessa Hopkins told me it would be 14 (children),” said Doss. “She wanted me to take one from each class. I don’t get involved with picking the kids. That would be a big mess. They pick the one that may need a coat, or they mark the ones coming in throughout the year that need the most help.”

“Regardless of wins and losses and the success you have on the floor, our responsibility as coaches is not only to develop the player, but more importantly the person,” McNary head coach Ryan Kirch said. “(The project) gives us the opportunity to give back to a community that does a lot to support us. I don’t want my own children to mock femininity. I don’t want them to laugh at "girly" things or to treat "girly" people as inferior. I don’t want them to turn their noses up at fashion or beauty, as if these outlets (despite their room for improvement) do not offer creative expression to the multitudes. They may someday reject traditional femininity (and things like the leopard print-hooded coat I dressed my eldest in this year along with it). In the meantime, however, I want to expose them to little things like dressing up so that they may learn there is nothing inherently wrong with doing so.
“It was pretty awesome to watch the kids go into a room and pick out brand new jackets. They sent the first group in and these were kids who had never had a new jacket in their lives,” Boham said. “Not only that, there were a couple of kids who came up to us and said they had received their first new coat a few years ago and still have it. We have people who donate every year and each year we have received more coats. It feels like it’s a bit slower this year and maybe that’s due to the number of people affected by the fires and people have donated to that, but the feedback and support we have gotten has been awesome.”
