It’s weird when you think about it, though. If the family is preaching that the girls must wear pants because of modesty and not wanting to "defraud" the thoughts of others, it means they’re looking at even their younger girls as romantic beings. Think about it: a five-year-old girl shouldn’t have to worry about giving someone impure thoughts because she’s in jeans. She’s just a child.

We’d do a onesie or shirt underneath the PJs, and then a swaddling blanket wrapped around it all, of course. On particularly chilly winter nights, noticing the baby’s room was quite cool, we’d sometimes even do a onesie, socks, light PJs, and fleece PJs over the top.

Sociopolitical intentions aside, there is a more immediate reason I dress my kids up sometimes. Quite frankly, it’s just fun. I cannot say the same about every element of having two daughters under 2. Some days, everything seems to go wrong. The little one will poop through all her clothes and bedding first thing in the morning while the big one throws her breakfast onto the dirty floor. My eldest will bite her sister’s toe, or my youngest will scratch her sister’s cheek. They will cry endlessly, for no discernible reason at all, until eventually I cannot help but join in. We will sit there, crying, amidst dishes that haven’t been washed in days and piles of toys that haven’t been picked up in even longer.

This was the most expensive jacket we tried, but also the one our seven-year-old tester took the biggest shine to. It kept him warm and dry in wet, windy weather on a coastal walk. It was also one of the lightest on test. He played football in it without getting sweaty, so I’d give it a good score for breathability. The hood is detachable, the side pockets are zipped and it has a decent reflective trim. Using it as their main spring-to-autumn jacket rather than as an occasional waterproof could help you justify the cost. 

This lightweight fleece hoodie from Columbia lets little ones move freely and keeps them warm at the same time. While I wouldn’t have my kiddo wear it on its own when it’s super chilly out, it is great for days when the temps are above 50 degrees F. He wears it on quick bike rides to and from the grocery store, or walking to his Nanny and Grandpa’s house.

My husband developed a good strategy, which is to just snap one of those two or three that close a onesie — or to just not care if the front of the PJs are mismatched and not perfectly aligned!
