With all of these options—regardless of whether or not they’ve been officially approved—you should always test them to make sure they are safe. The test is super simple, and Dr. Baer recommends all parents do this, regardless of how they dress their child in the car. Here’s how:

“This was exactly what I needed. It was true to size and totally adorable. My 21-month-old wore it three times, for a few hours each, and it held up just fine. He objected to the ‘hat’ for a minute, then forgot all about it and seemed totally comfortable. Some other reviewers were dissatisfied that there was no tail; I didn’t mind at all — he was still unmistakably a tiger, and I think it would have just gotten in the way and led to the whole thing ripping if it got caught. Totally recommend! Note: We did not have him walk outdoors with it — only indoors. If one is buying this for trick-or-treating, I’m not sure how long the feet would hold up.”

But in any case, I’ve had plenty of experience with newborn dressing. So take note: You know how many onesies have those envelope flap things at the shoulders? You can actually avoid pulling them over the head and simply slip them off over the bottom. Much. Easier.
